The Southwest of WA's maternity services encompass a level 5 obstetric unit at Bunbury Regional Hospital, 6 peripheral sites as well as community GP Obstetricians providing public antenatal care for around 2000 women per year.

In 2024 11.2% of pregnant women were diagnosed with gestational diabetes.

The regional diabetes service provides education and dietary support at Bunbury as well as Busselton. There is further afield support through telehealth.

There are specialist Obstetric clinics in Bunbury and Busselton hospitals and a newly established Obstetric Medicine Physician clinic. (start 10th July 2024)

GDM is the most common indication for induction of labour.

In June 2025 ADIPS published the updated diagnostic criteria for gestational diabetes in the MJA.

This, our, observational study will describe the steps of implementation of screening and the enablers and barriers in our region as well as changes in care delivery and distribution within a regional setting.
