Friday, 10th October Australasian Diabetes in Pregnancy Society and Society of Obstetric Medicine Australia and New Zealand Joint Scientific Meeting 2025

9:45AM - 10:35AM
Friday, 10th October
The Great Rooms 1 & 2

The conference will start with a welcome ceremony, a Pōwhiri.

All guests are requested to gather in the foyer area outside the Great Rooms 1&2, at 9:30am.

The Pōwhiri will start at 9:45am and will be preceded by a brief on how to participate in it. You will be guided through the various parts.

A Pōwhiri is a formal Māori ceremony of welcome. Its purpose is to acknowledge and unite manuhiri (visitors) and tangata whenua (hosts) together safely and respectfully. It is a way for the hosts to honour and care for visitors. Each stage of the Pōwhiri is governed by tikanga (customs) and kawa (protocols) determined by Ngāti Whāatua, the iwi (tribe) hosting. Through these rituals, karakia (prayer), whaikōrero (speeches), waiata (song) and sharing of kai (food), the Pōwhiri lifts restrictions so that both groups can interact freely.

Dress Code: Attire that is suitable for the conference will suffice, no additional requirements.

Please familiarise yourself with the two songs below - When a lead person starts to sing these, please join in.

Waiata 1: He hōnore, he korōria

https://youtu.be/My3E5qptjrg

He hōnore, he korōria
Maungārongo ki te whenua.
Whakaaro pai e
Ki ngā tangata katoa
Ake ake, ake ake.
Āmine
Te Atua, te piringa,
Toku oranga.
Honour, glory and
peace to the land.
May good thoughts come
to all men
for ever and ever, for ever and ever
Amen.
The Lord is the refuge
and my life.

“Waiata 2: E Toru Nga Mea

  • after the visitor response

https://youtu.be/ujkPK_NfR8U The leader sings the first line and the group repeats the line.

E toru ngā mea          There are three things

Ngā mea nui              Very important things

E kī ana                      As stated in
Te Paipera                 The Bible

Tūmanako                 Hope

Whakapono               Faith
Ko te mea nui           And the greatest thing
Ko te aroha.               Charity/ Love

The Pōwhiri will be followed by a short tea break where we will share kai (food). We will then reconvene at 10:35am for the conference welcome speeches from the presidents of both societies followed by the plenary.
